Janka ratings measure the hardness of wood, indicating how resistant it is to denting and wear. The rating is determined by the amount of force required to embed a 444-inch steel ball halfway into a wood sample. A higher Janka number means a harder, more durable wood, while a lower number indicates a softer, easier-to-dent wood.

WHAT IS JANKA RATING?
WHAT WOOD IS BEST FOR YOU?

When selecting wood for custom furniture, consider both the functional demands and the design intent of the piece. Durability, grain pattern, color tone, and how the material will age all influence the final look and feel. The right species should complement the environment — whether that means the quiet refinement of white oak, the richness of walnut, or the character of wormy maple. Moisture stability, sourcing, and finish compatibility also matter, ensuring the piece performs well over time. Ultimately, the best wood choice balances aesthetics, craftsmanship, and purpose — it should feel intentional, not incidental.

Below are more detailed descriptions of wood we commonly work with.

White Oak

Refined and timeless. Its tight, linear grain gives a clean architectural feel, while its natural warmth works across both modern and traditional settings. Exceptionally durable and finishes beautifully.

Natural White Oak

A lighter, more organic version of white oak — left closer to its raw tone for a soft, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. It feels fresh, understated, and honest.

Red Oak

Strong and dependable with a more pronounced grain pattern and warmer undertone. It brings a sense of familiarity and texture — great for spaces that lean traditional or transitional.

Walnut

Rich, dark, and unmistakably elegant. Walnut has a natural depth and complexity that instantly elevates a piece. It pairs beautifully with lighter materials like stone or brass.

Ash

Bright and energetic with a striking, visible grain. It takes color and finish exceptionally well, making it ideal for modern, playful, or tone-on-tone designs.

Clear Maple

Smooth and clean, almost minimalist in appearance. It’s a designer favorite for contemporary pieces where precision, lightness, and craftsmanship are the focus.

Wormy Maple

Rustic and full of character. The natural wormholes and mineral streaks tell a story — perfect for adding warmth and authenticity without feeling rough or distressed.

Tiger Maple

Distinctive and dramatic, with a shimmering “flame” or “curl” pattern that shifts with the light. Ideal for statement pieces that celebrate the craft and the material itself.

Cedar

Naturally aromatic and resistant to decay. Its soft tone and warm hue lend themselves to casual, relaxed pieces — often used for accent details or outdoor applications.

Poplar

Reliable and versatile, often used for painted finishes or secondary components. It’s stable and smooth, a quiet workhorse that supports more expressive design elements.
